Useful information about Buenos Aires

Buenos
Aires has always been an open-door city. Its inhabitants are
called Porteños, which makes reference to the fact that the city is a port.
Porteños are warm and hospitable: they usually invite tourists for lunch or
dinner at their homes and prepare typical food.
The characteristic infusion is the mate. It is prepared by pouring warm water
into a gourd, also called “mate” that contains “yerba mate”.
Some people add sugar into the infusion, but most of the “Porteños” prefer
"amargo" (a mate without sugar).

Language
& Slang language
Spanish is the official language. Most of the people working in areas related
to tourism speak English fluently.

The argentine Spanish slang is spoken in Buenos Aires
by the "porteños" (the inhabitants of Buenos Aires). Slang is usually not spoken
when a formal conversation is taking place. It’s also used in tango lyrics,
called “lunfardo” slang created as deformation of the origin language by immigrants.

BUENOS AIRES CLIMATE & WEATHER

Buenos Aires has a temperate climate with average temperatures ranging
from 35°C
(94°F) in
January to 10°C
(50°F) in
July. The heaviest rain falls during the winter months, though rain can be
expected at any time of year.

The climate of Buenos Aires is mild all year round. The mean
annual temperature is 18º C (64.4º F), making extremely hot and cold days very
infrequent. Thus, visitors can enjoy walking around the city in any season.

July is the coldest month. Although frosts
are rare, a woollen coat, a jacket or an overcoat and a scarf will be required
when going out. In winter, cold is moderate during the day, but temperature
considerably drops at night.

In summer, the weather is hot and humid.
Mornings are warm and during midday and the first hours of the afternoon, the
temperature rises. At night, temperature goes down slightly, so people may wear
light clothes; coats are not needed.

Rains are more frequent in autumn and
spring (from March to June and from September to December, respectively). They
are mild or last a short time, thus activities are not hampered and people
usually go out with an umbrella or a raincoat.

In the sunny days of autumn and spring,
mornings are slightly cold; the temperature rises at midday and drops again at
night.

Museums in Buenos Aires

In Buenos Aires there are 132 museums of different
kinds: art, history, science, technology, to name but a few. They range from
those designed especially for children to the Museo de la Pasión Boquense (Museum
of Passion for Boca), which recreates the history and sports achievements of
the Atlético Boca Juniors Club, located in emblematic La Boca neighborhood.

There are
some other museums of theaters, Creole customs (recreating the life of Gauchos),
religious matters, sculpture, painting and significant personalities in
Argentine history.

In this
wide variety, the Museo Evita (Evita Museum) clearly stands out, it exhibits
the life and work of Eva Perón. Indeed, Evita’s clothes and other belongings
are kept there, and also items from the Foundation she had created to help poor
people. There is a multimedia show for visitors to relive parts of her
speeches, watch a video of her funeral and the farewell her people bade her.

Lately, one
of the most attended has been the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos
Aires), also known as MALBA. Not only does it show works by Frida Kahlo, Diego
Rivera, Antonio Berni and Guillermo Kuitca but it also holds exhibitions and
lectures, filming sessions, and meetings arranged by companies or institutions.

Presenting
your DAR Discount Argentina card you get a FREE PASS to enjoy

Iguazú Falls are beautiful. This special spot in Argentina, gives you good energy and clear air.
In Misiones, Puerto Iguazú is the gateway to the majestic Iguazú Falls (parts of which are located in neighboring Brazil). The falls are located within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Iguazú National Park, whose subtropical rainforest provides a habitat for over 2000 identified plant species and 400 bird species. The Iguazú Falls are formed by the River Paraná which, before reaching the edge, divides into many channels. The most impressive of these is the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), which can be approached via a system of catwalks. At their highest point, the falls have a vertical drop more than one and a half times the full length of Niagara Falls. Visitors can catch a good view of the falls from a tower near the visitor center, which also organizes free trips to the Isla San Martín, another good lookout point from which to catch an extensive and crowd-free view.

Tango dance

Tango is a dance. Tango is passion, sensual, elegant and pure feeling.
Erotic and passionate, haunting and melancholic, it involves not only the body but also the soul. It takes two to Tango.
Tango has captured the popular imagination for over one hundred years to become at the end of the twentieth century, no less than an international cult.
Tango soon began to gain popularity in Europe, beginning in France. Superstar Carlos Gardel soon became a sex symbol who brought the tango to new audiences, especially in the United States, due to his sensual depictions of the dance on film. In the 1920s, tango moved out of the lower-class brothels and became a more respectable form of music and dance.
The later age of tango has been dominated by Ástor Piazzolla, whose Adiós nonino became the most influential work of tango since Carlos Gardel's El día que me quieras was released. During the 1950s, Piazzolla consciously tried to create a more academic form with new sounds breaking the classic forms of tango, earning the derision of purists and old-time performers. The 1970s saw Buenos Aires developing a fusion of jazz and tango.

Argentinian Wines: Mendoza and Salta

It is well known that wine production started millions of years ago. Not casually may be that Egyptians produced wines by techniques we still use today. They exported wines, too. Extrictedly labeled. In Egypt, wine production (just as Honey production) was a royalty matter. The best wines were meant for the faraon and his family. Common people consumed the lowest quality of wine.

In Argentina, wines are produced all along the base of the Andes, from the province of Salta to province of Río Negro. This regions are usually dry zones. These kind of greapfruits, grow better in non humid zones.
Mendoza is the most important wine producer. Mendoza roduces 60% of national production and is big in wine exportation, too. The most important production zones are: Agrelo, Valle de Uco Uco (Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos) and San Rafael.

Mendoza produces red wines such as: Malbec (more than 20.000 Hectares planted in Mendoza), Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, and wite wines such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and specially Torrontés.
Salta is another very important province that produces wines. The most important region in the province of Salta is Cafayate, a beautifull valley surrounded with mountains. The weather is dry and it has more than 300 sunny days per year.

Salta produces Torrontés, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah and Chardonnay, among others.
